{"id":1648,"date":"2020-04-07T20:19:41","date_gmt":"2020-04-07T20:19:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/friendsugandanskillstraining.org\/friendsugandansafetransport.org\/?p=1648"},"modified":"2020-04-07T20:19:42","modified_gmt":"2020-04-07T20:19:42","slug":"news-uganda-raids-lgbtq-homeless-shelter-arrests-and-jails-23-people-for-unwarranted-covid-19-offenses-after-considering-charging-them-under-anti-homosexuality-laws","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/friendsugandanskillstraining.org\/friendsugandansafetransport.org\/news-uganda-raids-lgbtq-homeless-shelter-arrests-and-jails-23-people-for-unwarranted-covid-19-offenses-after-considering-charging-them-under-anti-homosexuality-laws\/","title":{"rendered":"News: Uganda Raids LGBTQ Homeless Shelter, Arrests and Jails 23 People for Unwarranted COVID-19 Offenses After Considering Charging Them Under Anti-Homosexuality Laws"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>APRIL 6, 2020 &#8211; BY\u00a0ANDY TOWLE &#8211; Towleroad<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Uganda security forces\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kuchutimes.com\/2020\/04\/statement-on-the-raid-of-the-children-of-the-sun-foundation-shelter-for-lgbt-youths-in-uganda\/\" target=\"_blank\">raided a shelter for homeless LGBTQ youth<\/a>\u00a0last week and arrested 23 people, including a nurse and the shelter\u2019s executive director, charging them with unwarranted COVID-19 offenses after considering charging them under anti-homosexuality laws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Human Rights Awareness and Promotion Forum (HRAPF) reports: \u201cThe Police first considered charging them with having carnal knowledge against the order of nature under section 145 of the Penal Code, but this was later changed to doing \u2018a negligent act likely to spread infection of disease\u2019 contrary to Section 171 of the Penal Code Act, and \u2018disobedience of lawful orders\u2019 under section 117 of the Penal Code Act. This was in the context of the Presidential Directives on COVID-19 which incidentally require people to stay indoors, the exact thing that the people at the shelter were doing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Two people were beaten upon arrest.
